Chelsea 4, Wigan 0

Chelsea kept their unbeaten home record intact beating Wigan 4-0.
A clean sheet was a welcome return.
United won 3-1, so Chelsea kept pace.
Goals
Lampard 14
Robben 63
Kirkland 70 (og)
Drogba 93
The Team
The 4-3-3 was in effect.
Hilario
Ferreira, Carvalho, Essien, Bridge
Ballack, Maka, Lampard
Robben, Drogba, Kalou
First Half
Essien's walk around the pitch continued to central defense. He's very physical back there and with practice could be serviceable.
The left hand side was very strong. Robben was a great spark on the pitch, proving no truth to the Owen Hargeaves rumors. Bridge did a very good job working forward and joining the attack. While A. Cole has been serviceable, Bridge deserves more runs with the first 11.
Lampard was gifted on a set piece defensive lapse. But the team had been playing well with only 10 players - as Kalou worked out a knock.
Ballack was able to play in his more traditional roving attacking role with Maka holding .
Second Half
Robben made a feast of a defensive mistake and calmly beat the keeper. And then lucked out when the keeper put in the third off a quality run in the box.
Young players Mikel and Sahar came on. Mikel playing a quality cross into the area to assist on Drogba's goal.
Misc. Thoughts
Cech may be back for next week. He was on the field for pregame warmups.

Chelsea are through in their FA Cup tie with League 2 Macclesfield.
A well played game should ease some of the tension in the Blues locker room.
Next week's League Cup Semifinal should provide another valuable rest/break in the EPL season.

Chelsea 0, Villa 0
January 2, 2007 || posted by whitney
The Blues title chances took another hit as they drew Villa 0-0.
Despite a dressed down Mourinho, the Blues failed to convert one of their 21 goal attempts (11 on target).
Unable to capitalize on their gift from the Magpies on the weekend, the Blues sit 6 points behind United. (Effectively 7 points, given United's far superior goal differential.)
With two consecutive Cup Ties upcoming, hopefully the Blues can get back on track before returning to the Premiership.
A hard fought match produced only a handful of strong goal attempts, mainly for Chelsea, none of which were converted.

Another poor performance by the Blues led to more dropped points.
The story after the loss was a viciously honest rebuke of his under-performing players.
