Biography

Chelsea's second top scorer in the Championship win, Eidur Gudjohnsen's importance to the team was further enhanced in the second half of the season when it was discovered he could provide a major creative force in midfield.

The once feared Gudjohnsen-Hasselbaink strike partnership was finally put to rest the summer before with Jimmy's departure but Iceland captain Eidur caught his new manager's eye early on and played a key early part in the centre of a three-pronged attack, especially when Drogba was injured. Mourinho began the midfield experiement in the Carling Cup Final and has repeated it frequently since.

Clever of thought and quick of foot, Eidur's link-up play lubricates the team's attacking moves while his goals-per-game ratio over five Chelsea seasons has been a match for any colleague.

It has not always been plain sailing for Eidur since. He had force his way into the team after the start of many seasons here and his focus and fitness has occasionally been questioned. But he has grown used to battling for his place and has flourished under a manager prepared to express belief in him. Our third longest serving professional.
