With Ricardo having played a key part in Porto's remarkable two years packed with domestic and European honours, Marcel Desailly's place has been taken by another proven winner who was tempting other big name clubs, including Real Madrid.

His reputation as a complete central defender, dominant with feet and especially head, was only enhanced at Euro 2004 where he was an undisputed selection for UEFA's all-star squad of the tournament. His anticipation and interception skills are especially admired.

A remarkable 2004 was capped with UEFA's 2004 European Football Award for Best Defender.  The manner in which he adapted instantly to the demands of the Premiership and became an  important part of Chelsea's rock-solid early season confirmed that status.
