Chelsea 2, Porto 1
March 6, 2007 || posted by whitney
Chelsea defeated Porto 2-1 and 3-2 on aggregate to advance into the Champions League Quarterfinals.
A slow 1st half start nearly doomed the Blues, but a goalkeeping error by Helton swung the game to the Blues favor.
The underwhelming duo of Shevchenko and Ballack combined to score the winning goal. Finally, the two are starting to show their quality.

Robben 48
Ballack 79
The Team
4-3-3
Cech
Diarra, Essien, Carvalho, Cole
Lampard, Makelele, Ballack
Robben, Drogba, Sheva
First Half
Quaresma is certainly worthy of the EPL interest from Chelsea and Liverpool. He's quality and very reminiscent of the ROnaldo of two seasons past - talented, but needs a little more polishing.
The Blues were generally lackluster in defense, as there was limited chemistry between Carvalho and Essien
Second Half
The game was a story of two halves.
Porto had possession and a 1-0 lead, but Helton's terrible error on Robben stole all of their belief away and buoyed the Blues on to controlling the rest of the game.
Misc. Thoughts
Ballack and Sheva were able to add some value to the team.

Chelsea defeated Pompey 2-0, pulling 9 points behind Manchester United. The Blues still have a game in hand.
Strong play in goal by Cech was the big in-game story.
Overall, the story of the day was United's ability to steal 3 points from a superior Liverpool team in the AM.
Crouch failed to convert a goal mouth chance. A 10-man United convereted an extra time set piece to take a hardly earned 3 points.

Drogba Named African Player of the Year
March 3, 2007 || posted by whitney
Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has been named the 2006 Caf African Footballer of the Year.
It is the first time Drogba has won the award and, in edging out Samuel Eto'o, he denied Barcelona's Cameroon striker a record fourth-successive award.
Another Chelsea player, Ghana's Michael Essien, finished third.
Drogba, 28, captained his country to the 2006 African Nations Cup final and played at the World Cup finals as well as helping Chelsea win the Premiership.
"It is a great honour to be recognised," Drogba said. "I feel an indescribable joy and it's also a reward for all the sacrifices I have made in the past."
His success comes four days after he scored twice for Chelsea to help them beat Arsenal in the Carling Cup final.
Drogba polled 79 votes in the poll of Africa's 53 national team coaches, ahead of Eto'o with 74 and Essien's 36.
Eto'o had pipped Drogba to the 2005 award by two votes in the closest race in the award's 36-year history, with Essien again third.
But the tables were turned this year and Drogba becomes only the third English-based footballer to win the award after Nwankwo Kanu, then of Arsenal, in 1999 and Senegal's El Hadji Diouf, who was with Liverpool when he took the title in 2002.
Arsenal defenders Emmanuel Eboue and Kolo Toure and Tottenham midfielder Didier Zokora, both Ivory Coast internationals, were named in the 2006 Team of the Year with Chelsea rivals Drogba and Essien the other Premiership stars to feature.

Chelsea 2, Arsenal 1
February 25, 2007 || posted by whitney
Chelsea prevailed 2-1 over Arsenal in an eventful Carling Cup Final.
John Terry was stretchered off after taking a boot to the face and laying unconcious on the field. Depending on the severity of his injury, the victory may prove bittersweet.
Drobga did a double boosting his total to 28 on the season.
A fight broke out near the end of injury time.

The Team
4-4-2
Cech
Diarra, Terry, Carvalho, Bridge
Lampard, Makelele, Essien, Ballack
Drogba, Sheva
First Half
Arsenal fielded a young and pacey team. They were able to hold possession for long stretches, as the Blues were caught flat footed at the start of the game.
Second Half
The tone of the game changed dramatically after Terry took a boot to the head. He was immediately knocked unconscious and lay prone on the ground for some time.
Early reports suggest that he's left the hospital, so we can only hope fora speedy return.
Drogba snatched away Gunner hope with a superb header.
The youth of the Gunners came back to haunt them, as fatigue caused them to lose their composure.
Misc. Thoughts
While I'm sure that Ballack adds value to the team in subtle ways that are difficult to pick up through the TV, I've lost all patience with his apparent lack of control over the game. Mikel impresses me more.
Sheva has nothing left in the tank. All of his movements are slow. His inability to make runs seriously hurt our attacking efforts today.
